A more direct response to the readings is coming, but I thought I'd share a story:
I had ordered a mattress to be delivered paying a deposit with a credit card over the phone. When it arrived today, however, I didn’t have access to the physical card but could provide all the information necessary for the transaction. Yet even after an hour on the phone with three different Sleepy’s departments, I was not allowed to pay in person with only the credit card information; that is, without the material card. I could pay in full for the mattress (ahead of time) over the phone by reading out the credit card information, but if the transaction happened in person, the material card was required. I tried to explain to them that it was one and the same, that the physicality of the card was just a host for the information, a physical token of the information it represented, and what I was allowed to do by phone (ahead of time) I should be allowed to do in person, subconsciously bringing Hayles and cybernetics into my argument with Sleepy’s, but they would have none of it and so the posthuman drivers took my mattress away.
